Delegate, delegate, delegate.
It’s the number one rules in business. No matter how good you are, your are not a specialist on everything and you should focus on what you good at and let others specialist do the extra job.
That why you ended up here right? And you probably already read some Tim Ferriss stuff and get that if this guy got so much success it’s only because he understand really early to know how to DELEGATE! You don’t get to work 4 hours weeks by doing everything yourself.
Thanks to its creativity, its reactivity, and its flexibility, RBD provides us the perfect service. As an independent social media agency, we aren’t able to hire a full-time graphic designer. But our clients really need graphic creations to manage their online communities, and they always need it quickly.Alexis Coppé
Why entrepreneurs avoid delegation?
You will find a lot of reasons (or excuses) to not delegate like:
- I will lose control if I do it
- Someone else will get all the credits
- I don’t have time to train someone else
- I can do it better
- I don’t trust others
- I will loose my job…
Yeah well, all those points are valid. BUT, if you don’t do anything about it, nothing will ever change in your business… You need to find your way through those points and accept. Accept that, yes, maybe they don’t going to do it your way, most likely they will do differently but what? It’s not a big deal, remember that the purpose here is to save you time! So get over it.
If your concern is focused on losing control or credits it’s mean that your stand from an ego point of view and it’s the worst way to lead anythings, trust me on this. If something training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu told me, it’s to let my ego home.
Polyamorous have the word “Compersion”. It’s how to feel joy for your partner other relationship. I think we should seek compersion in our business and enjoy other achieving tasks that once be ours. Empowerment is a beautiful gift that, as a leader, you should give.
You should also give time to other to adapt to your way of working. The first tasks you will delegate will maybe take some time to be done perfectly for another person than you. It’s ok. Your an expert at it, not your employee so you need to be patient, they will get there.
How to delegate the right way?
Ok, here we go, your first delegation. I will say the most primordial think to do is “Briefing”. You need to be as clear as possible, go through all the process, what you expect as delivery and when you want it for. No one can read your mind so be as specific as possible.
Be available during all the process. It will take some tome at the beginning but it will help a lot your colleague if you are around to answer questions.
Give them space. I know it’s easy to over-looking to everything, but if you start to micro-manage the task you ask you will lose the whole benefit of delegating.
Feedback is essential for building a good relationship with your colleague. Take the time to review the job. You need to be open and honest and say what had to be said with respect. Explain what’s wrong and how they could do better. And when everything is good, say it too. Gratitude is always welcome and the sign of good leadership. And like for everything, the more your practice, the easier it gets. Well, except for burpees… That one never gets easier ><.
- Pick things to delegate
- Provide clear instructions
- Empower your staff and contractors
- Give good feedback
- Learn to let go
- Invest time for long-term success
I hope this post will give you some incentives to let it go some of your tasks. And if it’s come to graphic design that you will use the bear. We are always happy to onboard new customers. Take a look at our plans.
